From Akureyri Bus Terminal in Hafnarstræti 82, the route follows Road nr. 1, west from Akureyri offering great scenery of rich farmlands, narrow valleys and towering mountains.

Shortly after passing through Skagafjörður valley, the route exits Road Nr. 1. towards the west highlands past the Blönduvirkjun Hydro-electric Power Station and its huge reservoir up to Hveravellir nature Reserve where a short stop is made for food and rest.

Set between two glaciers the Hveravellir Nature Reserve is veritable oasis in the midst of the highland desert with geothermal activity, smoking fumaroles, and bubbling hot springs. Hveravellir offers a spacious camp site situated in a large meadow with great views.

From Hveravellir the route continues south across the interior highlands between the glaciers Hofsjökull and Langjökull towards two of Iceland's greatest attractions, the Gullfoss waterfall and Geysir hot spring area where a short stop will be made.

Leaving Geysir area, the route follows Road nr. 35 through Grímsnes area down to Road nr. 1 and over Hellisheiði to BSÍ Bus Terminal in Reykjavík's city centre.
